The Worklinks Community Mentoring Programme

Now operating throughout Brisbane North, Brisbane Central & West, and Sunshine Coast South Regions.

What is the Community Mentoring Programme?
This programme has been established by the Department of Education, Training and the Arts (DETA), to assist 15-17 year old high school students to achieve their potential in life, learning and employment. Under the programme, volunteer mentors from the community meet with a young person on a weekly basis to provide friendship, support and encouragement.

What time commitment is involved?
Mentors meet up with their designated student for approximately one hour per week, in school grounds and during school time. The expected duration of a mentor relationship is anywhere between four and nine months.

Why should I consider becoming a mentor?
There are a couple of good reasons to take part in this programme.

1. Most importantly, there is a great deal of self-satisfaction to be gained from helping a young person. The overwhelming feedback from our current mentors is that this is a really worthwhile programme to be a part of.

2. Worklinks is a Registered Training Organisation for the Accredited Short Course in Youth Mentoring. While this course is not compulsory, any mentor has the opportunity to gain this accreditation free of charge. There are three very small components to the Course - the first is completely covered off in the compulsory mentor training. The other two components are workbooks that you can finish off at your own pace. The Statement of Attainment gained would certainly be a handy addition to anyone's resume.

3. You have the opportunity to gain great practical experience. You have a say in what type of student you would like to be matched up with - there are so many students who could benefit from having a mentor. You are also welcome to mentor more than one student if you would like.

4. Mentors are provided with a great deal of training and support from the school at which they are mentoring and from Worklinks Inc.
